Jayashree Chakravarty

Jayashree Chakravarti, born in 1956, completed her graduation at Visva Bharati in the sprawling natural environs of Santiniketan. She pursued her Masters at the Faculty of Fine Arts at The Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, where she was exposed to an urban sensibility. She was also an artist in residence at Aix-en-Provence from 1993-95 and was inspired by the artistic explorations of the region contributing to her visual language. Inventing her own creative techniques, using organic material and varied kinds of papers, her installations in the form of paper scrolls remain unique in their conceptions and execution. She has had exhibitions both in India and abroad with shows at various museums including the Musee Departemental Des Arts Asiatiques Nice, France; The Tagore Centre, Berlin, Germany; Chicago Cultural Center, Illinois, USA and Singapore Art Museum (SAM), Singapore to name a few. Her recent shows include her exhibition at the Palazzo Madama, Turin, Italy; Musée Guimet, Paris, France; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Noida and New Delhi. The artist lives and works in Kolkata, India.

Anka-Banka Jomi/ Winding Terrain

Spanning 55 feet in length, this work—a scroll— invites viewers to navigate a landscape not in one sweeping glance, but step by step—mirroring the meandering rhythms of nature itself...From roots to stems, textures to armatures, twigs entwined with creepers—Chakravarty’s work is a meditation on the forms and fractures of nature. The details captivate her: the small, punched circles of paper, the magnetic tape from discarded cassettes, and the delicate balance between continuity and rupture. In these materials, she finds the echoes of nature’s own process—constantly shifting, expanding, breaking apart, and reassembling. Her fascination lies in the in-between spaces, where form is never fixed but always on the verge of becoming...Chakravarty’s vision challenges us, forcing a confrontation between the instinctual cycles of nature and the rigid structures of modern life."
